This 2400 mile canoe adventure following the Cache la Poudre, Platte, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers during the great flood of 1993, involves two brothers, a small red canoe and the desire to slow things down a bit. For the cost of a plane ticket, the pair follows the path of a mostly forgotten highway. This adventure shows in a comical way how travelers interact together and the interesting people that color our world. I will take you on a journey of self-discovery while canoeing the Mississippi. The first day we tipped over three times and lost a third of our gear. Canoeing across Nebraska involved more running and pulling of the canoe than floating. On the Missouri River, we canoed all day and night for a week to make up time. On the Mississippi River we entered a massively flooded river that was wreaking havoc on the country. From the wildlife along the Platte River in Nebraska to the Americans we met, we were constantly encouraged to keep paddling. I had believed that people would be interested in my first-hand reports, but I underestimated the interest people had in meeting us. It was as if they wanted to feel part of the journey. The continuation of this book, Ahora es Mejor - Now is Best includes biking in Central and South America, sailing the Caribbean, sea-canoeing Panama, rafting the Grand Canyon and more. I consider myself a brilliant idiot. Planning is sometimes best; other times action is best. It s difficult to always make the right choices. Poor planning and new ideas often have flaws. I discover those flaws with hilarious consequences. For some people, traveling comes easy. For some, relationships come easy. I've rarely met those people. Traveling at different times with my brother, girlfriend, a friend that is a girl, older couple, wife, male friends and large groups of people makes for interesting dynamics. Interactions between the travelers are as interesting as the amazing encounters and mishaps along the colorful path. From encountering quicksand to typhoid fever to a Latin American jail, the mishaps keep you laughing: the insights make you think. At the end of the canoe journey, Kent goes on to law school and Brad continues on a bicycle through Central and South America for a year until he reaches southern Chile.

This thoroughly updated Baldwin's Guide to Inns of Louisiana lists more than 180 inns, mansions, small hotels, guesthouses, cabins, and bed and breakfast lodgings. This guide covers the rolling pine-clad hills of North Louisiana and the moss-draped bayous of Acadiana, as well as New Orleans and other Louisiana cities. Also, in this new edition, the authors note inns that have been inspected by or that have become members of the Louisiana Bed and Breakfast Association, where applicable. Included with each location is information on prices, deposit and requirements, on-site facilities, local attractions. Jack and Winnie Baldwin, who reside in Bernice, Louisiana, have visited all of the splendour-filled destinations in this guidebook. They describe more than just the practical aspects of each inn. They feature the historical, anecdotal, and sometimes mysterious backgrounds of the dwellings as well. Each area or entry offers something special for visitors, from neighbouring must-sees to recipes featured in the homes and inns.

Designed in our new, gatefold postcard book format, the collection of these stunning images of the Crescent City are the elegant antidote to the typical throwaway souvenirs This book of thirty evocative postcards capture how southern Louisiana's unique history has left its indelible mark on the magical city of New Orleans and the plantations of its outlying River Road. Showcasing the region's most enduring symbols - Mardi Gras pageantry, crumbling plantations, lush gardens, Creole interiors, legendary jazz halls, intricate personal altars, and the lacy iron balconies of the French Quarter - photographer Richard Sexton's images make redolent reminders of this one-of-a-kind place.

Louisiana

Mike Tidwell knew nothing of the disappearing bayou country when he first visited the Cajun coast of Louisiana, but the evidence was all around him: the skeletons of oak trees killed by the salinity of the groundwater, whole cemeteries sinking into swampland and out of sight, telephone poles in deep, standing water. Thanks to human hands, the storied Louisiana coast was eroding, subsiding, and joining the Gulf of Mexico—-making it the fastest disappearing landmass on Earth. Yet no one seemed to know how to talk about the problem. Tidwell, a celebrated travel and environmental writer, decided to begin the much-needed conversation, and this vivid, elegiac book is the result.

Tidwell introduces us to the surprisingly varied population of the area: the Cajun men and women who work the seasonal shrimp harvest, the Vietnamese fishermen, the Houma Indians driven to the farthest ends of the bayou by the first European settlers. He describes the food, the music, the culture, and the life of all those who live along the bayous. And under his keenly observant eye, the bayou itself becomes a compelling character—-reminding us of how much we stand to lose if we fail to address the problems facing this most vibrant of places.

Part travelogue, part environmental exposé, Bayou Farewell is the richly evocative chronicle of the author's travels through a place and a way of life that are vanishing virtually before our eyes.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is an annual explosion of tumultuous celebration. It began among the French Creoles of New Orleans, and after the Civil War developed into a city-wide event with the visit of the Russian Grand Duke Alexis in 1870. In this reprint of the classic work by one of Louisiana's most notable authors, Robert Tallant examines the history and customs of Mardi Gras. He depicts the glittering balls, the ragtag marching clubs, the hilarious satires of the Zulu parade, and the grandeur of Rex. The volume tells how Mardi Gras has grown from a simple celebration to become the soul of the city. Robert Tallant (1909-1957) was one of Louisiana's best-known authors, and participated in the WPA Writers Project during the 1930s and 1940s. Besides Mardi Gras . . . As It Was , Tallant also wrote Voodoo in New Orleans and The Voodoo Queen . With Lyle Saxon and Edward Dreyer he co-authored the famous collection Gumbo Ya-Ya .
